Patient Participation Group Meeting (PPG) October 2020

SMA Presentation

Nick Christou (Senior practice manger) presented, organised, and chaired the meeting virtually. All meeting attendees were advised that no personal issues or medical conditions should be discussed at this meeting.

  • Post today’s meeting notes to all meeting attendees and include the next PPG meeting agenda.

Practice update from Nick Christou

  • The practice is OPEN and SAFE with all government requirements relating to Covid-19 in place.
  • The reception has had a Perspex protection screen installed.
  • Hands free sanitisers have been installed.
  • 2.5 permanent GP’s now working at the practice.
  • Flu vaccination programme is going very well for all priority patients and those over the age of 65 years. Appointments are on-going for other patients that require the flu vaccination.
  • Smear testing and other screening are continuing.
  • A Social Prescriber has been recruited.

Patient feedback from the meeting

  • All meeting attendees welcomed the update.
  • The majority of meeting attendees said that e-consult worked very well for them.
  • Notices at the entrance and inside the surgery to be put in place informing patients that they must wear Face Masks inside the surgery.
  • A patient attending the meeting said he was unable to view his repeat prescription medication in patient access.
  • The surgery grounds were now clean.
  • PPG chair elections have been deferred for six months due to Covid and are now scheduled to take place in April 2021.
  • Patient participation group meetings to re-start virtually after a 6 month break due Covid-19.

Action

  • Display Face Mask notices
  • NC to look into this for the patient although this is not the forum for personal issues.

AA Update

  • Great news that PPG meetings are being reinstated.
  • A new Covid -19 Testing Centre is open in the Stanley Road E10 car park at Bakers Arms.
  • Whipps Cross University Hospital redevelopment programme has been approved.
  • NHS plasma donor centre has opened in the Stratford shopping centre.

Minutes of the previous meeting

AA & NC reviewed the notes from the last PPG meeting and provided an update on the outstanding actions. Other than the date of the last PPG meeting which should read 29th October 2019 and not 29th October 2020 the attendees of the group agreed that the notes were accurate.

  • Upload the notes onto the SMA website.

Practice update from Nick Christou

  • Excellent news. The Hurley Group have been successful in the procurement process and have been awarded a 5-year contract and beyond.
  • GP Appointments are always available for on the day emergencies.
  • A clinical pharmacist Sanjida has been recruited so that patient medication can be reviewed.
  • Donna has been recruited as a Health Care Assistant.
  • Tina has been recruited as an additional nurse who will be working 4 days a week.
  • A Social Prescriber will be recruited in March or April. • Patients not attending their GP appointments has reduced from 9% to 5% -6%
  • Patients not attending their nurse appointments remains high.
  • A request to be made to the Hurley Group regarding 7:30am early morning opening of the Surgery doors on very cold mornings to prevent patients waiting in the cold.
  • More permanent GP’s are being recruited.
  • SMA looking to install a telephone queuing system

Well-Being Prevention

The next topic agreed with the PPG meeting attendees Mental Health has been postponed provisionally until May/June 2020 and replaced with the Patient Engagement Event on the 29th February 2020 12:00-16:00 all patients are welcome. The contents of the event to include :-

  • Representation from Carers for Waltham Forest and Diabetes UK.
  • Practice nurses on site to provide clinics for glucose. tolerance, blood pressure and smear tests.
  • Practice Manager and SMA team members.
  • PPG chairs.
  • Health Lifestyle.
  • E-consult training.

Action

  • PPG to organise a Mental Health information day.

Text Messages

Text messages sent to patients regarding appointments to be clear. Does the patient have to attend the surgery or is this a telephone call with the GP?

AA Update

Waltham Forest GP enhanced services (FedNet). Provides GP and Nurse appointments at Hub sites in Waltham Forest. FedNet GP services are available to patients who are registered with a GP that is within Waltham Forest. The services FedNet provide are:

  • A GP service available 7 days a week/365 days of the year.
  • Practice Nurse appointments provided 4 days a week 52 weeks of the year.
  • GP appointments are available weekdays from 6:30pm to 10pm and weekends from 8am to 8pm.
  • FedNet appointments can be booked via the following:-
    • FedNet call centre 0208-5193999
    • 111 direct booking
    • UCC and direct bookings into EMIS from the WF practices

Action

  • FedNet posters to be displayed within the SMA practice surgery.
  • Cards with FedNet contact details to be made available to patients who visit the surgery.
